Ultrasound of the breast is generally used in conjunction with mammography. Breast tissue that is too dense to evaluate solely on a mammographic image will be assessed with an ultrasound. It is also used to help clarify the nature of lumps felt in the breast or seen on the mammogram. It is a painless and safe examination. Breast ultrasound can be used as a primary examination in young patients, but is not recommended as a replacement for a mammogram in patients older than 40. It is useful to diagnose the presence of fluid-filled cysts and can be used to guide a needle insertion to drain cysts or biopsy lumps. Preparation for a Breast Ultrasound
No specific preparation is necessary. You will be asked to remove all your clothing above your waist and will be given a gown to wear.
